Self-reliance is a virtuous trait in an employee. Understanding how to help yourself at work and taking action is both empowering and beneficial to getting you where you need to go. However, there are times in our careers, in life, where assistance is needed. It is important to understand that asking for help is a strength, not a weakness.
As we grow, there is a transition within ourselves that takes us from never being afraid to ask a question or seek out help, to dreading it. However, when you ask a question and seek information it helps you gain insight and confidence. To the person you asked the question it makes he/she feel valued, important and knowledgeable.
One positive side effect of asking your trusted network for advice is that in the process of helping you, they often get on board with your idea. By allowing yourself to seek answers from others you are allowing yourself to grow and increase your self-reliance at the same time.
Next time you are in need of assistance, remember that asking for help is not only beneficial to you, but to the company.
